Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

TSH is the most sensitive blood test to check for thyroid function; however, your doctor may also order the actual thyroid hormones which we will call free T4 and free T3. T4 is more abundant but less potent compared to T3. Other tests check for antibody levels to rule out autoimmune conditions which can cause an under active or over active thyroid. An example is anti-TPO, which if elevated, signifies an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.

January is Thyroid Disease Awareness Month. Make it a priority this month to get your thyroid checked. Contact Allied ENT Specialty Center at 574-232-4800 to make an appointment.
